Drinking: Though his medications specifically say "do not consume alcohol while using" Pop usually drinks to help him sleep at night.

Living alone: Since Pop got sick and had to quit his job, handing it down to Tu, he has not left his house. He's become a serious hermit and Tu can't remember the last time he's seen his old man outside.

Background:
Reid was born in Ba Sing Se where not really much happened for most of his childhood. At 18, he decided it was time to go out on his own and start a career, without his parents shadowing him all the time. That's when he came to Republic City. Times were hard at first, he was on the street for the first little while, as he hadn't quite thought it through before showing up... After helping an earthbender with repairing a storefront (the man had lost control of one of his stone bricks and Pop managed to catch it before it fell to the ground) he offered Reid an apprenticeship. That's really when things took off for him, he trained his earthbending in ways he never thought of and became a very skilled contractor. Not quite in high demand, but when he branched off from his mentor, he kept his prices fair and kept his work quality. He was making enough to get by and that was all that mattered.
His life was quiet for a while after that. Business was steady and he'd made a few good friends. It wasn't until his late 20's before he met the girl of his dreams, Sunita. He had a contract with her father and they often flirted with each other while he was on site. After his work was finished, he didn't see her for a while though, and he figured it wasn't meant to be.
She showed up at his shop one day though and they had a very sweet reunion and everything was good and happy. They dated for a long time before Reid actually asked her to marry him. Of course she said yes, and then things were even better. Happy times.
When Reid was 34 (his Sunita now 28), Tu was born and Mama and Pop were the best parents they could be. Though as Tu got bigger, Sunita seemed to get weaker, and by the time Tu was 4 she was permanently hospitalized and diagnosed as terminal (she basically had cancer, I don't know if Avatar world has actually cancer or not???). She passed away not long after Tu turned 5 and Reid was left to raise him on his own.
He was a great dad. At least he tried to be. Sent his son to the best nonbender school in the city! It was the one Sunita had went to... He was proud, not at all disappointed that his son was not a bender... Until the accident happened at the school, the one Tu doesn't like to talk about. But it revealed a miracle. His son really was a bender! And now he could follow in his footsteps. He enrolled Tu into an earthbending school and trained him himself after school as well. Taught him how to read blueprints and everything.
As Tu got older and stronger, he also gained more confidence, which Reid was quite happy with. What he wasn't happy with though, was how goofy and driven by getting female attention he was... It was unprofessional and embarrassing. But, the boy was a teenager, so he dealt with it.
Pop got slower as he got older and had to start working shorter days, which he did not want, he wanted to work! But Tu insisted he needed rest and that he could finish faster without him. This made Pop a little bitter.
At 55 Reid had a minor heart attack which caused permanent damage to his heart and forced him to retire and live out the rest of his days on medication. This was the last straw. Every "nice" fiber in his body withered and he became a sour old man. He won't even leave his house. Not to get his medication, not to get his own food. Nothing. Tu does regular pharmacy visits and grocery shopping for his father, though Pop says he doesn't need to.
Tu hates seeing his father this way, but it's kind of hard to feel sorry for him when he gets drunk and says mean things to you... He doesn't like getting other people involved with his problem, but he's started to bring Mellie along to visit the old man. He seems to almost behave himself when Tu brings friends... Almost.
